#28
I just heard that I’m one of the 50 Infuential Rabbis named by Newsweek Magazine.
Although I can think of many more influential rabbis who should be on this list, it is great for Birthright Israel NEXT to get this kind of exposure. And I am happy to be standing next to Rabbi Art Green, #27. Fourteen years ago, he blessed me and my beloved under the chupah – so it is fitting that we are joined at the hip. Mazel Tov to all the new names to make the list.

I am a Birthright alum (Winter ’07) and have twice run a Birthright NEXT Shabbat for my friends. Here’s the problem: my friends and I are for the most part traditionally observant, and make Shabbat dinner and lunch weekly almost without fail. As a poor college student I have been trying to rectify taking advantage of this generous offer on the grounds that the money is there, we’re not breaking
We could probably say the same about the many Observant folks who go on the Taglit-Birthright Israel trip itself. A vast majority would go without the ‘free trip’ But our donors are not trying to limit that. My advice, if you want people who are not observant to do this, invite them to your dinner, teach them, and then tell them about NEXT Shabbat.
